Government-Approved Houseboats in Alleppey: What to Check
Ask which approval covers which boat. Check identity and documents separately from the facilities included in your day-cruise booking.

What does “government approved” mean?
Ask which authority issued the approval, what document proves it and which exact houseboat it covers. Kerala Tourism classification and permission to operate are different checks. A company logo, a package category or a photograph of a certificate is not enough to identify your assigned boat.
For an Alleppey day cruise, check the vessel’s identity and documents first, then confirm what your daytime booking actually includes. Neither check replaces the other.
Tourism classification is not an operating licence
Kerala Tourism’s published scheme classifies houseboats as Silver Vessel, Gold Vessel or Diamond Vessel. Operators apply if they want classification. The scheme expressly separates classification from licences and other permissions required by the relevant authorities.
It also requires classified boats to display their name, KIV number and classification certificate. These give you identifiers to ask for—not a reason to assume that every boat sold by the same business holds the same approval.

Four checks before accepting a boat
- Identify the vessel. Request its name, KIV number, recent exterior photographs and the operator’s details. Ask whether your quote reserves this named boat or only a category with the actual vessel assigned later. Keep that answer with the photos.
- Identify the claimed approval. If the seller says “Kerala Tourism approved,” request the classification certificate or order, category and validity details. Check that the document concerns the vessel offered, rather than another boat or an approval belonging to the travel business.
- Cross-check the official record. Open the Department of Tourism’s approved-houseboats list and compare the available identity, category, order and validity information with the supplied document. On 19 October 2026, the page displayed a list dated 14 October 2026. Reopen it when booking; do not rely solely on an old screenshot.
- Ask about operating documents separately. Request the boat’s current operating licence and the issuing authority’s details. Where authenticity, validity or a mismatch remains unclear, seek clarification from the authority concerned before committing. A tourism-list match alone should not be treated as verification of every operating document.
If the list does not give you a clear match
Do not guess from a similar name or a matching category. If identifiers are missing, the page is incomplete, or the order differs from the seller’s certificate, send the boat details and document to Kerala Tourism through its official contact channel for classification clarification.
Not finding a boat in a tourism-classification list does not by itself establish that it is unlicensed. Equally, an operator saying “renewal pending” is not enough to resolve an uncertain document. Ask for the relevant evidence and official clarification. If you cannot establish what the claim means, leave the booking unconfirmed and compare another option.
“Premium” and “luxury” are not document checks
A sales label such as Deluxe, Premium or Luxury does not tell you which official certificate the vessel holds. Request the certificate’s actual category rather than translating a marketing term into an official grade.
Even a verified classification does not settle your day-use agreement. Ask which lounge, deck, room and toilet your party may use, whether daytime cooling is included, and what meal and cruise hours are agreed. A bedroom visible in photographs is not automatically part of a shared-seat day ticket; compare private and shared day-cruise access before relying on it.
For two common day-use details, check which toilet day guests can use and daytime bedroom and lounge AC arrangements. Those practical answers still need to describe your assigned boat and package.
Keep the confirmation tied to the actual boat
Save the vessel identity, document copies, accepted photos and complete group quote and package terms together. Ask what happens if the assigned boat changes: you need to review the replacement’s identity, documents and agreed facilities before accepting it. A replacement from the same company should not inherit the first boat’s paperwork by assumption.
This process reduces unanswered questions; it does not guarantee safety, availability or a particular experience. For enquiries through this website, the Alleppey houseboat day-cruise options remain subject to the assigned boat and final written quote. No website estimate establishes government approval for a vessel not yet identified.
